Farming with tradition, for the future

The third generation now owns the business. From modest, small-scale farming, we have grown into the international oats trade

“Kaski” means slash-and-burn farming, carrying the memory of land acquisition in the harsh boreal forest. Now, we aim for sustainable growth and clean energy.

The story of Kasken tila begins in the 1930s when Ilmi and Kalle Marjamäki settled the small farm in the middle of forest and wetlands. Over the decades, the farm has produced cattle, potatoes and sugar beet, among other things. Now the farm is taken care of by Ilmi’s and Kalle’s granddaughter Pirjo together with her husband Markku.

Under the current owners, the farm has expanded and changed its primary production type. The transition to organic farming began with Finland’s EU membership in 1995. Nowadays, Kasken tila produces organic oats, blueberry and sea-buckthorn.

Markku has been at the forefront of the energy transition. The energy source of the grain dryer was changed from oil to wood chips already in the 1990s, among the first in Finland. Kasken tila has invested heavily in solar energy in recent years, producing 42 MWh of solar electricity yearly.

The main business of Kasken tila is currently grain drying, sorting, storage and trade. We provide high-quality oats, both organic and conventional.
